Six years after the tense thriller The Charmer (ZFF 2017), director Milad Alami arrives at ZFF with a new title that will keep you glued to your seats. When a dangerous rumour forces them to flee Iran, wrestler Iman (Payman Maadi – A Separation, About Elly) and his family come to Sweden seeking asylum. In order to increase their chances of staying, Iman restarts his wrestling career in Sweden, but the rumours that they tried to escape from soon resurface. Opponent premiered at this year’s Berlinale, and was selected as Sweden’s Oscar candidate.

Milad Alami is a Swedish director born in Iran. He graduated from the National Film School of Denmark, after which he made several fiction shorts, including Void (2014) which premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at Cannes. Alami’s feature debut, The Charmer (ZFF 2017), premiered at San Sebastián, where it was awarded the FEDEORA Award. His second feature, Opponent (2023), premiered at the Berlinale.
