Twelve-year-old friends Nora and Hae Sung are separated when Nora moves with her parents from Korea to Canada. Twenty years later, Nora is married and developing a successful writing career in New York. When she learns that Hae Sung is coming to New York for a week, the two meet. Described as a cross between Before Sunrise and In the Mood for Love, this melancholic romantic debut from Canadian-Korean director Celine Song has not stopped wowing audiences and critics since its premiere at Sundance.

Celine Song is a South Korean-Canadian director, screenwriter and playwright living in the US. She started her career in the theatre, later moving into film. Her play Endlings premiered at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, and then at the prestigious off-Broadway theatre New York Theater Workshop. She also worked as a screenwriter on the first season of Amazon series The Wheel of Time. Past Lives is her directorial debut.
