Indonesia, the end of colonial era. Dutch sugar plantation owner Jan and his wife Agathe are at the top of the food chain. When Jan dies suddenly, Agatha’s privileged status is threatened so she forces her estranged son Cornelis and his wife to return from Europe and take over the family business. Cornelis quickly reveals his progressive plans for the future, but when Jan’s will announces that his mistress Siti will come to run the estate, enlightened values will be the first to go. This lavish and merciless surrealist satire about the decline of European colonialism is director Ena Sendijarević’s second feature (Take Me Somewhere Nice – ZFF 2019), and it was awarded for best acting performance (Renée Soutendijk) at Locarno.
