Hardly Working explores the work and life realities of NPCs – the non-player characters in video games that populate the digital world as extras to create the impression of normality. A laundress, a stable boy, a street sweeper, a carpenter – they are Sisyphean machines whose work routines and activity patterns, as well as bugs and malfunctions, paint a vivid analogy of work under capitalism. Winner of the Pardi di domani Best Direction Award and Junior Jury Award at Locarno.

The pseudo-Marxist guerilla arts collective Total Refusal explores and practices strategies for artistic intervention in contemporary video games. They employ tools of appropriation and redistribution of game resources. Their award-winning films and performances have been presented among others at Berlinale, Locarno and at the MoMA in NYC.
